A nne Vassaas is a Norwegian visual artist, raised in Trondheim and living on beautiful Jeløya in Moss. She has a background in ceramic design, painting, drawing and graphic design.

Her background as a draftsman, painter, and ceramist adds a lush sensuality to Anne's artistic expression, and her experience as a designer contributes to the necessary compositional balance in the images.

Anne's long-standing interest in process-oriented inner work has contributed to an intention to create images that touch on a deeper level.

About the artwork

Anne works in a figurative tradition with symbolic undertones. Her distinctive style is characterized by complex compositions, a refined wealth of detail and supporting characters. Often people and animals in mythical or dreamlike contexts. The dynamics of the images are often about deeper unconscious processes, which can be released in something new, trustingly creative.

Anne's art technique

Anne works both quickly and slowly, with layered construction where tape is used to create graphic-embossed elements and exciting contrasts. The images are characterized by a combination of loose, random, often with ornament-embossed patterns, and tight control in the form of defined contours. In the background, fragments of poetic texts, indirect symbols or splashes of ink can be glimpsed. Acrylic paint, ink and charcoal are used.

She does not follow any fixed patterns, each image is created from an openness and a dance with the process, whatever emerges along the way is processed into an expression. After the first, loose and intuitive phase, the processing phase follows, where the image must have balance and the composition must land. There, elements can be moved around until they form a whole. The last phase is the longest and most demanding , where all the details must find their place and contribute to the whole.
